👉      Currently it is considered that the present day lion originated in Central Europe during the warm period between the first and the second glaciation. From there, it moved to Africa and to India. Morphologically the Asiatic lion (in Gir) differs from its African cousin in several ways. Thus, the size of the African lion is slightly larger and heavier than the Asiatic lion. The mane of the African lion is bulkier and more prominent as compared to that of the Asiatic lion. The hair-tufts at the tip of African lion's tail are smaller than that of the Asiatic lion. Moreover, there are also some differences in elbow tufts, belly skin fold, skull, temperament etc. Before project Tiger, Lion was the national animal of India.
